Spain is, of course, best known for Sherry. Sherry is a fortified wine that is produced in the south west of Spain centered on a town called Jerez de la Fontera some sixty odd miles north west of Gibraltar. Sherry owes it's character to the Palomino Grape which is grown in the white chalk soils called albariza which predominate in this region. The grapes are pressed and fermented, followed by what is termed maturation.

Maturation allows time for the development of the wine and the blending of one vineyard with another. Fortified by adding Brandy, the process continues by the Solera system. The method ensures the blending of one year with another in a precise and controlled manner, until maturity. The aim is to produce a sherry that maintains it's character and individuality, thus allowing the shipper continuity of product.

Rioja:
Although a spanish wine, Rioja wines are of French origin. As a result of the damage to vineyards in Bordeaux in the late 1800's by disease to the vines. The French came to the Rioja region of Spain and bought vineyards. The wines are, therefore, mostly of the Claret type. The traditions introduced remain to the present day.

Three types of aged Rioja wines are exported:-

  • Rioja Crianza
  • Rioja Riserva
  • Rioja Gran Riserva
